Forrester Report on Chaos and Control in Enterprise Web 2.0

Excerpt from Eric Schurr's blog on February 25, 2022

Rob Koplowitz of Forrester Research just issued an interesting report about "Walking the Fine Line Between Chaos and Control in the World of Enterprise Web 2.0."  It's available to all Forrester clients but can be purchased by others, too.

The research explores the delicate balance between trying to shut-down and over-control the use of social media and Web 2.0 in a company (it doesn't work -- users always find a way to get around it) vs. an uncontrolled "do whatever you want" mentality (who could be comfortable with that?).  The report gives some practical advice on how to walk the line so you're not at either end of the spectrum.

It resonates with me, and it relates to the survey we recently did about the use of Web 2.0 in the enterprise (I posted about it here and the survey results are available here). In that survey we found a lot of enterprises are or want to adopt Web 2.0 but are concerned about some of the issues that Rob's report explores.

Some of this can be addressed by policy and publication, as the report points out.  Beyond that, however, there are also real requirements for moderation, security, user permissioning, and other controls. Most corporations want to know that they have the levers and dials available to them to implement whatever kind of control mechanisms are appropriate -- and they also want to know that they can change it over time.
