The Hype is Real: Social Media Invades the Inc. 500

Nora Ganim Barnes, Ph.D. & Eric Mattson over at UMass Dartmouth have just completed a study of the Inc. 500 and their use of social media (the Inc. 500 is a list of the fastest-growing private companies as named by Inc. Magazine). In their study they found that there was a drastic difference in the adoption rate of social media when comparing the fastest growing companies and the highest revenue companies.

More specifically, they found that...
  • 33% of the Inc. 500 use message boards
  • 27% of the Inc. 500 use social networking
  • 24% of the Inc. 500 use online video
  • 19% of the Inc. 500 use blogging (compared to only 8% usage by Fortune 500 companies)
  • 17% of the Inc. 500 use wikis
  • 11% of the Inc. 500 use podcasting
