Open Social and Enterprise Social Media

Dave Carter's recent post on this topic resonated with me, and I thought I'd share a recent story I heard from someone outside the company that illuminates some differences about "social media" and "enterprise social media."

This person belonged to a company that had some company-sponsored groups in a consumer-focused social media offering, which meant that to sign up for the group you had to have a valid corporate email address.  No problem there.  However, it gets interesting when someone leaves the company -- the email validation only happens at signup time, not on an ongoing basis, which means that after you leave the company you still have access to the group.  That's exactly what happened to this person - -he can still sign in to the "corporate group" and see and do whatever he did before.

That has some interesting consequences:
  • If a company is sharing proprietary or confidential information in the group, it is accessible to people who leave the company.  That means the information won't be confidential for long, and the person who left the company is no longer bound by any NDA or contract they may have signed when they were with the company. Clearly, that's not a good idea
  • Who owns the content in the group?  The terms of use of consumer-oriented sites make it clear that they own the content, not the sponsoring party.  What corporation would want that?

These are just a few examples of the kinds of issues you run into when you try to use personal-use/consumer-oriented social media tools inside of an enterprise.

COMMENT: Eric, I am starting out with Wainhouse Research as the analyst on Enterprise Social Networking (ESN as we call it). Let me know. BTW, I agree the assessment that any company that uses a public SN site to transact internal business is very risky. It seemed kind of obvious to me that there is a total loss of control over the information in the site and simplistic authentication. So you never know what people will do. Regards, David
